They Don't All Hate Us

I'd like to say a big hello to all the visitors from my wife's blog, They All Hate Us.

No, this blog has nothing much to do with fashion, but if you like the sun, sea and surf, you've come to the right place. Enjoy!

Why this?

Learning to surf as an adult, for most people, is hard. It takes lots of practice and you tend to plateau all the time...and doubt creeps in.

Back when I started to learn to surf in late 2003, I was already keeping a regular diary, so extending it to surf wasn't a big deal.

I can surf now, but while I was in the 'thick of it', learning to surf, going out in crazy conditions, being sworn at, I didn't really think I'd make it.

This is my rather voluminous, in-need-of-editing, account. I've pretty much moved on now to running a surf group which is populated with lots of beginners going through exactly what I did. Life goes on. Take what you will. Don't bloody well give up!

The Sydney Surf Group - 173 members and counting!

Here's a plug...it's pretty obvious that I love to surf, so to share the stoke with like minded people, I started The Sydney Surf Group. If you're in Sydney, join us for a whole heap of fun.

Check it out at www.sydneysurfgroup.com and also become a Facebook fan.

Recently, I commissioned 'surf artists',
Katherine Hall, to design a logo for the group. I'm stoked with what she came up with!

Session Number: 879 - Safety in numbers - not!

Start: 7:30 AM
Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Surf: 4 times

Mark: Not in all my long years of surfing have I seen such a crowded spot. Seriously, ridiculously crowded!!! Luckily, what collisions did occur nearly all involved Nana...who smiled disarmingly at the hapless bloke. I'll admit it now, but I had a self-inflicted smack to the head from my heavy board. I had flying fish circling my head for a while! Did the same happen to Matt? Soon I will look at the footage and post the video for all to see. Had a really fun morning with only a few OK rides. Great catching up at the Dee Why cafe afterward for chats about IT, forensics, airports, etc...oh, and a bit of surf talk :)

Gareth: Great morning - So different to Manly on Saturday. It was pretty small and crowded but great fun to be able to have a laugh and enjoy being out in the water. Also a great day to practice some basic skills. I must have got 10 waves which is a great tally!! Mark/Ginge - thanks for the lifts and offers of lifts.

Miki: Beautiful day in the water. Awesome watching Hanna catching wave after wave on the 6'4"! Thank you Pete for avoiding me when paddling between me & Michael (sorry Michael though!) Got rather crowded when the longboarding group paddled out so joined Anne where we had the waves to ourselves :) Really great seeing Michael & Nana out there and enjoyed a chat over coffee & breakkie at Wildwater.

Nana: I had a great time as usual! Thanks Kevin for the tips on sitting on my board, Peter for checking up on me after our 3 way collision & Mark for organising yet another awesome sunday morning!

Matt: A bit crowded & small...but how warm was the water!!, great breakie afterwards as well :-)
