They Don't All Hate Us
I'd like to say a big hello to all the visitors from my wife's blog, They All Hate Us.
No, this blog has nothing much to do with fashion, but if you like the sun, sea and surf, you've come to the right place. Enjoy!
Why this?
Learning to surf as an adult, for most people, is hard. It takes lots of practice and you tend to plateau all the time...and doubt creeps in.
Back when I started to learn to surf in late 2003, I was already keeping a regular diary, so extending it to surf wasn't a big deal.
I can surf now, but while I was in the 'thick of it', learning to surf, going out in crazy conditions, being sworn at, I didn't really think I'd make it.
This is my rather voluminous, in-need-of-editing, account. I've pretty much moved on now to running a surf group which is populated with lots of beginners going through exactly what I did. Life goes on. Take what you will. Don't bloody well give up!
The Sydney Surf Group - 173 members and counting!
Here's a plug...it's pretty obvious that I love to surf, so to share the stoke with like minded people, I started The Sydney Surf Group. If you're in Sydney, join us for a whole heap of fun.
Check it out at www.sydneysurfgroup.com and also become a Facebook fan.
Recently, I commissioned 'surf artists', Katherine Hall, to design a logo for the group. I'm stoked with what she came up with!

Start: 9:10 AMTime: 1 hr 40 minsSurf: 10 timesConditions: Hip to shoulder high, smooth, glassy, high tide, dangerous and dumpy close to shore, no wind.
Mark: What a relaxing, beautiful place to surf. Reasonably big surf and the shorebreaks meant that it was pretty damn tricky. So glad I took the much more manoeuvrable 6' 6" Wombat out. I never thought I'd say it, but shortboarding rocks! Don't know where the energy came from, but I had an absolutely awesome time this morning. Once again, it was so great seeing everyone get on so well. You guys are the best! Thanks for the food by-the-way. Glad I ditched the pie! Gareth, sorry about the leg rope...and thanks for the great photos. Can't stop looking. Did I celebrate V-Day??? What do you think :)
Matt: What a great day out! Special thanks to my travel'n 'Harem'...you know what i mean ;-)...photos posted soon. We had some great waves for some but maybe low tide would have suited others...next time girls. I think Mark nearly dropped in on me again!!, Gareth almost smashed the board camera (haha) & Legropes getting snapped...but everyone kept smiling, great to see.

Miki: Waves were FUN - seemed easier (for me) to catch early on but was fun the entire time. I personally prefer to get axed (which I do plenty!) than not give it a go - within reason of course :) Love getting challenged and having a great bunch of folk to do that with. Thanks Paul for offering to lend me your 5'10" but was worried about smashing it on the shore breaks - you've seen my "style" LOL. Thanks to Matt for the lift, Mark for organizing, Gareth for the awesome pics and everyone for the fantastic morning!

Gareth: What a great meetup. Great location and plenty of waves. I guess the conditions were a little challenging (dumpy and close in) for some of us (me included) but that's really just part of surfing. Still everyone got out there and gave it their all and that's what makes the day!! Thanks for the lift and organising Mark - look forward to the next meet-up!!
Hanna: Beautiful Beach!! Only caught one, but it was amazing:)
Kajo: What a great morning. I had a blast out there (although alluva sudden everyone had disappeared). It got bet when the tide receded and there were some very surfable 2-3 footers around.
Nana: Awesome watching everyone! will need to work on my skills! thanks matt o for the ride and mark for organising!!
Suzan: I had a GREAT time, even if I couldn't get out. But, I got to watch a fantastic curve ride from Hanna!! :o) Go girl! And, thank you Mark for organising a big turn out! :o) And, thank you Gareth for fabulous memories. :o)
