They Don't All Hate Us

I'd like to say a big hello to all the visitors from my wife's blog, They All Hate Us.

No, this blog has nothing much to do with fashion, but if you like the sun, sea and surf, you've come to the right place. Enjoy!

Why this?

Learning to surf as an adult, for most people, is hard. It takes lots of practice and you tend to plateau all the time...and doubt creeps in.

Back when I started to learn to surf in late 2003, I was already keeping a regular diary, so extending it to surf wasn't a big deal.

I can surf now, but while I was in the 'thick of it', learning to surf, going out in crazy conditions, being sworn at, I didn't really think I'd make it.

This is my rather voluminous, in-need-of-editing, account. I've pretty much moved on now to running a surf group which is populated with lots of beginners going through exactly what I did. Life goes on. Take what you will. Don't bloody well give up!

The Sydney Surf Group - 173 members and counting!

Here's a plug...it's pretty obvious that I love to surf, so to share the stoke with like minded people, I started The Sydney Surf Group. If you're in Sydney, join us for a whole heap of fun.

Check it out at www.sydneysurfgroup.com and also become a Facebook fan.

Recently, I commissioned 'surf artists',
Katherine Hall, to design a logo for the group. I'm stoked with what she came up with!

Session Number: 799

Start: 5:00 PM
Time: 50 mins
Surf: 5 times
Conditions: Hip to the very occasional head high, smooth, predictable, high tide. Offshore wind.

First session of the Noosa holiday and it came straight on the heels of the Noosa Longboard Festival. Needless to say it was carnage out at the point with not a rule book in sight.

Perfect waves for the last 15 minutes of the competition.

As you'll notice in the video, I had to resort to using a length of string to attach the camera to the hire board (the GoPro suction cup doesn't work in the surf) and I couldn't help but notice the ridicule as I paddled through the masses with a GoPro camera dangling from the mouth. But hey, I'm a creative sort of guy with a thick skin.

The swell has been pumping all day and may even get bigger tomorrow. Fcuk it's like the waves were divinely made to compliment longboarding! I hope lots of surfers will be back at work tomorrow or hung over from the after party. How I dred the gnarly masses!

Hired the Robert August Tuflite board from Noosa Longboards...and I was so focused on filming, I can't really say how it surfed.

The standard of surfer was amazingly obvious, so I hung back on the side and caught what I could. Yes, it was really frustrating, but I did it for my art and a good dose of humility.

The music is pretty good for this session. Get it here.

Toes to the nose...is little Jay going to make his dad proud?
